Imagine yourself on the same trail that Sir Hugh Low used to scale Mt. Kinabalu 150 year later. That’s just what members of the Sabah Society did in 2001. The book accounts the expeditions taken by eight members of the society comprised of amateur climbers to trace back the original trail of Sir Hugh Low up the mountain in 1851.
The book contains many pictures and scenes of flora and landscape never captured before. Earlier I mentioned expeditions because there is a twist to the story. In 2001, the group thought they had used the original trail in fact it was the wrong one. In 2003, the society mounted another expedition, this time using the correct trail according to the journal entries of Hugh Low and subsequent explorers. Both expeditions started out from Kiau village known for its hardy mountain guides. The Kiau villagers are considered to be guardians of the mountain as offerings must be made to appeased the mountain spirits before any ascent. Strict rules and discipline must be observed while climbing otherwise something bad will happen.
It’s an interesting book to read especially if you want to read more about one of Sabah’s prominent heritage.
